What capillary blood can do – and what it can’t

The honest answer first: capillary blood does not replace every venous blood draw. Many standard parameters – vitamins, thyroid values, blood lipids, HbA1c – are validated for capillary blood and the shipping route. Other parameters are sensitive to haemolysis, sample volume or transport time and belong in a venous workflow or a different sample type.

That is why every programme at Probatix starts with the parameter-to-sample-type mapping: which values should be measured, and which sample type delivers them in stable, validated quality? The preanalytics – collection, storage, shipping – are the biggest source of error in lab diagnostics and are controlled systematically through matched devices, instructions and return logistics.

What is the difference between home sampling and a self-test?

With a self-test, the end user collects the sample and evaluates it themselves – the result is produced at home following rapid-test logic. With home sampling, only the collection happens at home; the analysis takes place in an ISO 15189-accredited specialist laboratory with medical report approval. That is the difference between an unverified quick result and a reliable lab report.

Which values can be measured reliably from capillary blood?

Many standard parameters – such as vitamins, thyroid values, blood lipids or HbA1c – are validated for capillary blood. Not every value can be measured reliably from a few drops, however; some parameters require venous blood or a different sample type. Probatix checks the parameter-to-sample-type mapping per panel and says openly what cannot be measured credibly from capillary blood.

How stable are the samples in postal transit?

That depends on the parameter and the sample type. Dried Blood Spot is stable at room temperature for days; liquid capillary blood is only offered for parameters whose stability is validated for the shipping route. Return logistics are designed for short transit times; sample receipt and quality are monitored systematically.

How quickly is the result available?

For most tests within 48 hours of sample receipt at the lab – plus the shipping time of the sample. Status transitions and report approval are reported to your system in real time via webhook.
